Teaching Artist Institute 2008: Yes Child, No Child, Whose Child, Every Child

On May 15 - 17th, the 2nd Annual Teaching Artist Institute was presented by Alameda County Office of Education’s Alliance for Arts Learning Leadership, California College of the Arts’ Center for Arts and Public Life and the Alameda County Arts Commission. This dynamic learning, networking and professional development opportunity for teaching artists and community artists interested in teaching in schools was hosted by the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre and California College of the Arts in Oakland.

Institute Highlights
The 2nd annual Teaching Artists Institute asked the question “What is the role of the Teaching Artist in making social change?” In large group engagements, small group interactions and personal reflection, participants explored the role of racism and classism in their personal experiences, in classrooms, and in the school system, and sought actions we can take to work toward more equitable classrooms for our diverse student populations. Classroom strategies, cross-cultural communications, and the role of California State standards in achieving equitable classrooms will be part of the curriculum.

The Institute featured a special performance of “No Child…” written and performed by Nilaja Sun. In this incredible solo show, Nilaja takes on 17 roles in 70 minutes, transforming her eight-year adventure as a teaching artist into a master class on heartbreak, humor and hope. A question and answer session with Nilaja and students who had viewed the performance along with the Teaching Artist Institute participants was a powerful learning experience.

The Institute will be facilitated by a team of experienced individual Teaching Artists and professional development specialists from partnering organizations including Attitudinal Healing Connection, Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, California College for the Arts, Cal Performances, California Shakespeare Theatre, Destiny Arts, Luna Kids Dance, Museum of Childrens Art (MOCHA) and others.
