A dynamic learning, networking and professional development opportunity for teaching artists and community artists interested in teaching in schools.

Presented by: Alameda County Office of Education’s Alliance for Arts Learning Leadership, California College of the Arts’ Center for Arts and Public Life and the Alameda County Arts Commission.

Hosted by: Berkeley Rep School of Theatre on May 15; California College of the Arts in Oakland on May 16 & 17

Course Content
The 2nd annual Teaching Artists Institute asks the question “What is the role of the Teaching Artist in making social change?” In large group engagements, small group interactions and personal reflection, we will explore the role of racism and classism in our personal experiences, in our classrooms, and in the school system, and seek actions we can take to work toward more equitable classrooms for our diverse student populations. Classroom strategies, cross-cultural communications, and the role of California State standards in achieving equitable classrooms will be part of the curriculum.

Institute Faculty
The Institute will be facilitated by a team of experienced individual Teaching Artists and professional development specialists from partnering organizations including Attitudinal Healing Connection, Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, California College for the Arts, Cal Performances, California Shakespeare Theatre, Destiny Arts, Luna Kids Dance, Museum of Childrens Art (MOCHA) and others.

Featured Presentation
May 15th activities include a performance of “No Child…” written and performed by Nilaja Sun. This play portrays the struggles—and miracles—of America’s public schools. In an incredible solo show, Nilaja takes on 17 roles in 70 minutes, transforming her eight-year adventure as a teaching artist into a master class on heartbreak, humor and hope. “No Child…” proves one passionate person can make a difference.

Institute Cost: The $95 fee covers all three days and includes morning beverages and bagels, afternoon snacks, all resource and arts materials, and the matinee performance of Nilija Sun’s play.
