ARTS ACTIVE PARENT
May 2008 - Volume 3, Issue 8

No Child... is an award-winning play that inspires the hope that public education can deliver on its promise for every child to thrive in school. This splendid dramatic experience is a rare opportunity to witness the vision that brings us all together: arts learning in schools helps every child realize their full potential.

Please join us at the Berkeley Rep for Opening Night, Monday, May 12. Proceeds will benefit arts learning opportunities for students and teachers in Alameda County!

Be prepared--You will want every teacher, parent, principal and friend you know to see this show!

Parents Making a Difference
(and having fun!)
Lobby Crew at High School Shows

Springtime is performance time for high school music, dance, and drama programs. Volunteering in the lobby is a great way to stay in touch with the school, support the programs, and meet other parents.

At Oakland Technical High School (above), parent volunteers Richard Young, Patricia Williams, and Phyllis Hall learn box office and ticket-taking procedure from Performing Arts Committee Chair Bonnie Trinclisti. At Skyline High, also in Oakland (below), performing arts parents Debbie Koppman (also artist-in-residence at Sequoia Elementary and local muralist) and Andy Norton prepare for intermission crowds at the concession counter.

Short Video for Parents
We all know about the importance of parent involvement in the schools. This new video shows parents of different backgrounds speaking in different languages about their involvement, and articulating the benefits, both for their kids' schools and for the parents themselves. It's short enough to be a good addition to just about any parent meeting or get-together. See it here.

ALAMEDA COUNTY ALLIANCE FOR ARTS LEARNING LEADERSHIP

In 1999, the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) convened the Alliance for Arts Learning Leadership (Alliance) to address the huge gap in arts education resources in the county public schools. The Alliance is a collaboration of the ACOE, its 18 school districts, principals, teachers, teaching artists, arts organizations, parents, community members, policymakers and students. Its mission is to ensure delivery of high quality education through arts learning for every child, in every school, every day.

For information about the Alameda County Alliance for Arts Learning Leadership, how it supports arts education in public schools, and how to get involved, visit www.artiseducation.org.

If you know of people who would be interested in receiving this newsletter, please ask them to send me their email addresses.

We gratefully acknowledge the Walter and Elise Haas Fund for sponsoring the Arts Learning Parent Involvement Project to create stronger ties between homes and schools around the arts.
