The arts are a way for people to express themselves. When I act, I get to pretend to be another person; tell someone else’s story. Acting about social issues really helps the community and myself. I get to uncover the truth about how problems like oppression affect people’s lives, and then show what I have learned to an audience. It would feel like a great accomplishment to know that my acting actually had a positive influence on another person’s life and changed their way of thinking.

I love the idea of entertaining people. I watch so much television that I might as well give myself a chance to learn and have fun through theater. But it can be challenging. Sometimes it’s hard to take on the role of someone else, especially when you haven’t experienced the same things in your life they have. I have to develop different emotions so I can play a really convincing character.

With all of the challenges that come with theater, I’ll always keep trying to become a better actress. I can apply the saying, “practice makes perfect,” to acting and other things I do in my life like schoolwork or other jobs. The possibilities theater offers are endless – from going to the big screen to teaching kids how to act. Even if I don’t pursue a career in theater, I’ll always have memories of doing something that had a positive impact on myself and others, and a skill to fall back on.
